VISA CUP                     Madison Square Garden, New York, February 28, 2004

Katie Temple, a 12 year old Level 6 gymnast at Gymnastics Revolution, attended the VISA Cup of Gymnastics in Madison Square Garden, New York. This event, showcasing Olympians and World Champions from the past years, is a prelude to the Olympic Trials and  the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

What follows are highlights of Katie's commentary on the event, along with beautiful images by Gymnastics Revolution's resident photographer, Philip Morton.

· The Visa Cup was amazing, with the best gymnastics I have ever seen.

· On the Uneven Bars, there were many near-flawless routines, but none that came close to that of Carly Patterson, who showed that she was prepared for anything!

· Elena Gomez would not be defeated without a fight!

· Pommel Horse was not the men’s best event (with four falls), but they were still great.

· Floor, on the other hand, was spectacular. What a show!

· The women did really well on Vault, especially Elena Gomez and Carly Patterson. Many of the girls did Tsukaharas and Yurchenkos.

· Blaine Wilson, while in the middle of his routine, suddenly fell, with a torn bicep.

· The men also did a great job on Parallel Bars, with the Hamm brothers (Morgan and Paul) scoring very high.
· On the vault, the men did an outstanding job, with no exception. Marian Dragalescu won, with a front handspring, double tuck, with a half twist.

· On Beam, Carly Patterson once again beat everyone with her double Arabian dismount.

· Many gymnasts did very well, for instance, Courtney McCool executed every skill in her routines so well.

· The men’s Horizontal Bar dismounts were flying high! They had powerful giants, perfect pirouettes, and amazing release moves.

· On the sixth, and final, session, the up beat music started, and the girls were on a roll.

· Chelsie Memmel, in my opinion, had the best routine, after she pulled through from a hard landing on her first tumbling pass.

· But once again, Carly Patterson took everyone’s breath away with a 9.837 routine, which was near perfect.

· There were many notable guests there, too, including Nadia Comaneci, who scored the first perfect 10 in that very same building in 1976.

· In the end, Carly Patterson took first place on every single event!

· The men split the awards, and nobody won more than two events. Jason Gatson won the All Around.

The 2004 Visa Cup ended in great fashion, with Carly Patterson, World All Around silver medalist, and Jason Gatson, World All Around finalist, crowned victorious.

The competition was a powerful display for the thousands of aspiring gymnasts in the crowd, and USA Gymnastics continues to make the sport exciting with the addition of John Macready’s “In-the-Crowd” segments.
